Costume Panic vs Fridge Raid
The short answer
Both start from what you already have instead of what you could buy. Fridge Raid turns the food in your fridge into dinner tonight. Costume Panic turns the clothes in your closet into a costume tonight. Hungry, use Fridge Raid. Dressing up, use Costume Panic.
Costume Panic
Paste what's in your closet and how long you've got. Get three costumes you can put together tonight from clothes you already own, and the one to pick.
- You paste
- List the closet. Write down what you could wear, in plain words: colours, jackets, hats, shoes. Add the odd things lying around the house too, like sunglasses, a lanyard or a cardboard box.
- You get
- Backup. If the tie is missing, go lost tourist. It needs no ironing and the lanyard does the joke for you.
- When to use it
- Use it two hours before a Halloween or fancy dress party, when the shops are out of everything and you're staring at a closet of normal clothes.
- When to skip it
- It can't see your closet, it only uses the list you give it, so it may suggest a piece you'll need to swap. It won't help with full makeup tutorials or costumes that need sewing, and it can't promise people will get every reference, so it says how recognisable each one is.

Fridge Raid
Paste what's in your fridge and cupboards, how long you have and who's eating. Get one dinner you can make tonight, using up what goes off first, with no extra shopping.
- You paste
- List what you have. Open the fridge and type what's in it, roughly. Add what's going off soon and the cupboard basics you have (pasta, rice, tins, spices). Rough notes are fine.
- You get
- What's left. Use the 3 eggs tomorrow: a quick frittata or eggs on toast. Nothing to buy tonight.
- When to use it
- Use it at 7pm when you've opened and closed the fridge twice, there's food that has to be eaten today, and you're one tap away from ordering delivery.
- When to skip it
- It doesn't know what's actually in your fridge or how fresh it is, it only uses your list. It can't judge if food is still safe to eat, so when in doubt, check it or throw it out. For serious allergies, read the labels yourself, it won't catch hidden ingredients.
