Steps
Step 1
Export the chat
WhatsApp: open the group, tap its name (iPhone) or the three dots then More (Android), and pick Export chat, Without media. Slack or Discord: select the messages since you left off and copy them. A plain copy-paste works too.
Step 2
Say who you are and since when
Write your name as it appears in the chat and roughly when you stopped reading. Delete phone numbers or anything private you don't want to paste into a chatbot.
Step 3
Run the prompt
New chat in ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. Paste the prompt, then your note and the export. Very long chats work best in Claude or Gemini, which take more text at once.
Step 4
Check before you reply
Every item comes with a time and a name. Search the chat for that time to read the original before you answer, especially anything that sounds like a decision about you.
What you get
What you put in and what you get out
When to use it
Use it when you muted the group for an afternoon and came back to 300 messages, a plan that changed twice, and a question to you buried somewhere in the middle.
When to skip it
It only sees text. Voice notes and photos show up as "<Media omitted>" in an export, so anything said in them is missing. It lists where those gaps are instead of guessing.

Full prompt
catch-me-up.prompt.txt
You help one person catch up on a group chat they fell behind on. You read the messages they missed and tell them what matters, fast.
INPUT
- The person's name as it appears in the chat (and any nicknames).
- Roughly when they stopped reading.
- The messages since then: a WhatsApp export, or a copy-paste from Slack, Discord, Telegram, iMessage, or similar.
HOW TO WORK
1. Find everything aimed at the person: @mentions, their name, questions clearly meant for them, and tasks someone gave them or they agreed to. Keep the time and the sender for each.
2. Track every plan or decision to its latest version. If it changed, give the final version and say briefly what it replaced.
3. Collect dates, times, places, amounts, and "bring X" items.
4. List questions to the group that nobody answered.
5. Count the messages that were only banter, memes, reactions, or off-topic, and skip them.
6. Note gaps: "<Media omitted>", voice notes, deleted messages, or polls whose result isn't in the text.
RULES
- Use only what is in the messages. Never invent a time, a decision, or what a voice note or photo said.
- Every item gets a time and a name, so the person can find the original.
- Later messages beat earlier ones. If two people still disagree, list it under Still open, not as decided.
- If a message could be a joke or serious, say that it is unclear.
- Don't judge or rank people, and don't repeat gossip or personal details beyond what the person needs to act.
- Be short. Use the chat's language.
OUTPUT
## Needs you
Each item: time, who, what they want, quoted in a few words. Write "Nothing" if empty.
## What changed
The final state of each plan or decision, one line each, with what it replaced.
## Dates and details
Times, places, amounts, things to bring.
## Still open
Unanswered questions or unresolved disagreements.
## Skipped
"About N messages of banter skipped." Plus any gaps (media, voice notes) that might matter.
## Reply you could send
One or two short lines answering what needs the person, in the chat's tone. Leave out if nothing needs a reply.Copied it? Get the Friday roundup. Seven agents and one tip, once a week.
How it works
Group chats are where plans get made and remade in real time, usually while you're busy. By the time you look, the useful part is three lines spread across 300 messages: the time moved, someone's bringing salads, and somebody asked you a direct question two hours ago and is now wondering why you're ignoring them.
This agent reads the whole thing so you don't have to scroll. It works out the final version of each plan, pulls out everything aimed at you, and tells you how much of the chat you can safely skip.
What to paste
Your name as it shows up in the chat, roughly when you stopped reading, and the messages since then. A WhatsApp export works as-is, timestamps and all. So does a copy-paste from Slack, Discord, Telegram, or iMessage.
What you get back
First, what needs you: questions, @mentions, and tasks with your name, each with the time and who asked. Then what changed, written as the final state ("BBQ is Sunday 2pm, not Saturday"). Then dates, open questions nobody answered, and a count of what was just banter. At the end, a short reply you can send, if one is needed.
It sticks to what's in the text. It won't guess what a voice note said, it doesn't take sides in an argument, and when a message could be a joke or serious, it says so instead of picking one.
Questions about Catch Me Up
How do I export a WhatsApp group chat?
Open the group, tap the group name on iPhone or the three dots then More on Android, choose Export chat, then Without media. You get a .txt file. Open it and paste the part since you stopped reading.
Is it okay to paste a private group chat into a chatbot?
These are other people's messages, so be careful. Paste only the stretch you missed, delete phone numbers and anything sensitive, and use a chatbot whose data settings you have checked, for example with training on your chats turned off.
Is Catch Me Up free?
Yes. The prompt is free to copy, download, and reuse under CC-BY-4.0. There is no sign-up on One Agent a Day. You only need access to a chat model such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini.
Which AI tools does Catch Me Up work in?
It was written for ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. It is a plain-text prompt, so any capable chat model can run it. Paste the prompt first, then your input.
What do I paste into Catch Me Up?
Export the chat. WhatsApp: open the group, tap its name (iPhone) or the three dots then More (Android), and pick Export chat, Without media. Slack or Discord: select the messages since you left off and copy them. A plain copy-paste works too.
