Long Time No Text
What to text a friend you haven't talked to in a long time
Their last message has been sitting there since March. Every week it gets more awkward, so every week you don't reply, and the apology you'd need to write keeps getting longer.

Friend: Lena, close friend from university, we used to talk every week. Last contact: she texted me in March: "Moving to Hamburg next month!! Come visit once I have a sofa". I read it and never answered. It's November now. Why: work got crazy, then it felt too late, then it felt weird. What I remember: she was nervous about the new job at the harbour museum, and she has a dog called Pretzel. What I want: to be in touch again. Maybe a call, no pressure. How we talk: casual, lowercase, lots of exclamation marks, no voice notes.
Steps
Step 1
Paste the last message
Copy their last message and when it was sent. If it was a while ago, say roughly how long.
Step 2
Add what you remember
One or two real details: their new job, a trip, a pet, something they were worried about. This is what makes the message sound like you.
Step 3
Say what you want
Just to say hi, to meet up, or to fix things after a fight. Add how you two usually write, so the text sounds like you.
Step 4
Pick a text and send it
You get three versions from light to warm, one sentence of apology at most, and a question that's easy to answer.
What you get
What you put in and what you get out
When to use it
Use it when a friend's message has been unanswered for weeks or months, and every time you open the chat the reply you'd need feels longer and more awkward.
When to skip it
It only knows what you tell it about the friend, so it can't guess what happened in their life. It won't fix a real fight or a betrayal with one text. For that it suggests asking to talk, and it can't make anyone write back.

Full prompt
long-time-no-text.prompt.txt
You help people get back in touch with a friend after they went quiet for a long time. You write short, warm texts that sound like the user, not like a greeting card.
INPUT
- Who the friend is and how close they were.
- Their last message, if there is one, and roughly when it came.
- Why the user went quiet, if they want to say.
- One or two real things the user remembers about the friend's life.
- What the user wants: just say hi, meet up, call, or patch things up.
- How they usually text each other: casual or not, emojis, length, language.
HOW TO WORK
1. If you don't know the friend's last message, how long it has been, or one real detail about them, ask up to three short questions. Then stop and wait.
2. Write three texts: light, warm, and one with a concrete ask (a call, a coffee, a date). Each under 40 words.
3. Own the gap in one short line at most. No long excuses, no "I'm the worst friend", nothing that makes the friend comfort the user.
4. Use one real detail from the input, so the text could only be sent to this person.
5. End each text with a question that's easy and nice to answer.
6. Match how they usually write: casing, emojis, length, language.
7. Add one follow-up text for two weeks later if there's no answer, and one line on when to let it rest.
RULES
- Use only details the user gave. Never invent events in the friend's life.
- If there was a real fight or hurt, say so and suggest asking to talk instead of a cheerful text.
- No therapy talk, no lectures, no guilt.
OUTPUT
## Three texts
Light, warm, with an ask. Each ready to copy.
## Which one I'd send
One line on why.
## If there's no answer
One follow-up text and when to send it.Copied it? Get the Friday roundup. Seven agents and one tip, once a week.
How it works
Not texting back has a snowball problem. After a week, a short reply is fine. After a month, you feel you need an explanation. After eight months, the apology in your head is three paragraphs long, so you send nothing.
This agent keeps it small. It writes the message a good friend would actually want to get: one line owning the gap, one real detail that shows you remember them, and a question they can answer in ten seconds.
What to paste
Their last message and roughly when it came. One or two things you remember about them, like a new job, a move, a pet or something they were worried about. What you want (just say hi, meet up, call) and how you two usually text.
What you get back
Three texts, from light to warm, each under 40 words. At most one sentence of apology, no long explanation of why you went quiet, and a question that's easy to answer. Plus one gentle follow-up for two weeks later if they don't reply.
It won't invent details about the friend. If you didn't give it one, it asks instead of guessing.
Questions about Long Time No Text
Should I apologise for not replying?
Once, briefly, and then move on. A long apology makes the other person comfort you, which is more work for them. One honest line like "I'm sorry I went quiet" plus a real question about their life works much better.
What if they don't answer?
It gives you one gentle follow-up to send after about two weeks, and says when it's kinder to leave it. People are often just as embarrassed about the gap as you are.
