Sample you can paste

Job ad: Operations Coordinator at a bike-sharing startup in Berlin. Must-haves: coordinate a field team of 10+, Excel or Google Sheets, solve problems fast, German B2 and English. Nice to have: experience with apps or startups. "Tell us why bikes."
My CV: 3 years as shift lead at a supermarket (team of 12, rota planning, stock orders in Excel). 1 year customer service at a phone company (handled complaints, top-3 for satisfaction). German native, English C1. I ride to work every day, fixed my own bike for years.
Tone: friendly but professional, they seem casual. Max one page.

Steps

  1. Step 1

    Paste the job ad

The whole ad, including the bits that sound like filler. The must-haves and the odd questions ("tell us why bikes") are what the letter needs to answer.

  2. Step 2

    Paste your CV

Your CV or a rough list of jobs, numbers and things you're proud of. Plain text is fine. Add anything that isn't on the CV but fits this job.

  3. Step 3

    Say the tone

Formal, friendly or somewhere in between, the language, and any length limit from the ad.

  4. Step 4

    Check and send

You get a letter under 300 words, a list of which requirement each paragraph answers, and the gaps it left out on purpose instead of faking.

What you get

What you put in and what you get out

When to use it

Use it when an application is due, you have the job ad open in one tab and your CV in another, and every letter you start sounds like it could be for any job.

When to skip it

It only knows what's in your CV and the ad, so it can't research the company for you or know what the hiring team really wants. It won't invent skills or numbers. If you don't meet a must-have, it says so instead of hiding it.

Full prompt

dear-hiring-manager.prompt.txt

You write cover letters that answer the job ad with the applicant's real experience. You are direct and specific. You never invent anything.

INPUT
- The full job ad.
- The applicant's CV or a list of their experience, with numbers where possible.
- Extras that fit this job but aren't on the CV.
- Tone (formal, friendly, in between), language, and any length limit.

HOW TO WORK
1. If the job ad or the CV is missing, ask for it and stop.
2. From the ad, list the must-haves, the nice-to-haves and any direct question (like "tell us why you want this").
3. For each must-have, find the strongest real proof in the CV. Prefer numbers and concrete situations.
4. Write the letter:
   - Open with something specific to this job or company that is true for the applicant. Never "I am writing to express my interest" or "I am excited to apply".
   - One short paragraph per key requirement, each with one real example.
   - Answer any direct question from the ad.
   - Close with one line about next steps.
5. Keep it under 300 words unless the user asks otherwise.

RULES
- Use only facts from the input. If a must-have isn't covered, don't fake it. List it as a gap and, if there's something close, name it honestly.
- No clichés: "team player", "passionate", "fast-paced environment", "I believe I would be a great fit".
- Short sentences. Match the requested tone and language.

OUTPUT
## Cover letter
The full letter, ready to paste.

## What each paragraph answers
Requirement → the example used.

## Gaps
Must-haves not covered, and what (if anything) you could say about them.

How it works

Most cover letters fail the same way. They open with "I am writing to express my interest", list adjectives like "motivated" and "team player", and never answer the three things the ad actually asked for.

This agent reads the job ad like the hiring manager will. It finds the must-haves, finds the proof for each one in your CV, and writes a short letter that answers them in plain words.

What to paste

The full job ad, your CV or a rough list of what you've done (with numbers where you have them), and the tone you want. Add anything that isn't on your CV but fits this job, like a hobby or a side project.

What you get back

A cover letter under 300 words with an opening that isn't a cliché, one real example for each must-have, and a short close. Under it, a list of which requirement each paragraph answers, and the gaps it didn't fake.

It never adds skills, numbers or titles you didn't give it.

Questions about Dear Hiring Manager

Will it make up experience I don't have?

No. It only uses what's in your CV or what you tell it. If the ad asks for something you don't have, it lists that as a gap and, if it fits, points to something close you actually did. You decide whether to mention it.

Does it work for career changers or first jobs?

Yes. Paste what you have, including part-time jobs, volunteering, projects or school work. It looks for the skills the ad asks for in those, and says plainly which requirements you don't meet yet.

Is Dear Hiring Manager free?

Yes. The prompt is free to copy, download, and reuse under CC-BY-4.0. There is no sign-up on One Agent a Day. You only need access to a chat model such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini.

Which AI tools does Dear Hiring Manager work in?

It was written for ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. It is a plain-text prompt, so any capable chat model can run it. Paste the prompt first, then your input.

What do I paste into Dear Hiring Manager?

Paste the job ad. The whole ad, including the bits that sound like filler. The must-haves and the odd questions ("tell us why bikes") are what the letter needs to answer.
